Synthetic Drug

Charge Enquiry

What are synthetic drugs?

Synthetic drugs are a recent topic in the media.  Synthetic drugs are chemically altered substances that are designed to mimic the effects of dangerous drugs such as MDMA/Ecstasy, Amphetamine, Cocaine and Cannabis.  Synthetic drugs are usually categorised into two groups, based on their chemical composition:-

  • Cannabinoids, which are designed to replicate the effects of cannabis; and

  • Cathinones, which are designed to replicate the effects of "party drugs" such as MDMA.

The packaging for synthetic drugs usually states that the products are not intended for human consumption.  Often, however, the marketing and labelling is clearly suggestive of an ulterior purpose.

Recently, the Queensland Government has embarked on a "crackdown" on synthetic drugs.  The definition and lists of dangerous drugs have been extended to include:-

  • a salt, derivative or stereo-isomer of a dangerous drug;

  • any thing that has a chemical structure that is substantially similar to the chemical structure of a dangerous drug;

  • any thing that has a pharmacological effect that is substantially similar to the pharmacological effect of a dangerous drug; and

  • any thing that is contained in a natural substance, or in any preparation, solution or admixture.

Many people fall prey to advertising that states that synthetic substances are "legal highs".  You should contact a Queensland Drug Lawyer immediately before purchasing any such product.  In reality, these "legal highs" often fall within the definition of a dangerous drug and are illegal.

What are synthetic drugs charges?

Synthetic drugs charges fall under the Drugs Misuse Act.  Some of the charges include:-

  • possessing a dangerous drug;

  • supplying a dangerous drug;

  • producing a dangerous drug; and

  • trafficking in a dangerous drug.

Synthetic drugs charges are serious and the penalty may include imprisonment.  If you or someone you know has been charged with a synthetic drugs offence, you should contact a Queensland Drug Lawyer for expert advice and assistance.
